Companies View Coaching and Mentoring as Critical in the Covid Crisis – According to New Study by the HR Research Institute

In the age of the Covid-19 pandemic, employee coaching and mentoring are not being put on the back burner. Instead, they are quickly adapting by relying on videoconferencing and other virtual technologies.

This adaptation has happened so quickly that HR professionals still see coaching as important (57%) and half still view mentoring as important.  In fact, most (72%) report that their organizations will make use of virtual coaching and mentoring as a reaction to the pandemic.

The free research report, The State of Coaching & Mentoring 2020, is now available for download.’s Research Institute conducted the study of HR professionals to better understand the state of coaching and mentoring in today’s organizations.

Although coaching and mentoring are widely viewed as important, most organizations are still not using them as effectively as they could. In fact, only 28% of HR professionals believe that more than half of their coaches are highly effective, and just 33% think half or more of their mentors are effective.

“The struggles with coaching and mentoring are not specifically linked to a greater usage of remote technologies,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of  “Rather, there are long standing challenges with employee coaching and mentoring.  They are widely seen as key developmental strategies, but few organizations have mastered them. In fact, our new report takes an indepth look at the major challenges facing both coaching and mentoring.”

Further examination highlights the fact that coaching and mentoring are seen as having a positive impact on both individual development and organizational performance. However, one key challenge is that many leaders lack skills in these areas.  The research did highlight some concerns about workforce coaching with the fact that about half (51%) of organizations with coaches do not provide formal training in coaching skills.  Only 29% provide formal training for select groups and just 20% provide formal training for everyone who does coaching.

Investment in coaching and mentoring programs will pay off as employers leverage virtual and remote technologies to provide a safe platform for trainers to reach employees anywhere in the world at lower cost and safer distances.
