In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, many employers are adapting their performance management (PM) priorities and processes. Although such changes are important, they also make it even more challenging to improve today’s under-performing PM systems.
The free research report, The State of Performance Management 2020, is now available for download. For the third consecutive year, HR.com’s Research Institute conducted the study of HR professionals to better understand the effectiveness of current performance management systems and where they need improvement now and in the near future.
This year, just over one-third of HR professionals (37%) say their PM process meets organizational performance management goals to a high or very high degree, slightly higher than the proportion in 2019 but still the minority. What’s more, a third believe their leaders still view PM as a waste of time or a “necessary evil.” Only 23% say leaders view PM as crucial for overall business performance, though another 17% say they see it as an aid to employee development.
Further examination reveals that many managers lack necessary performance skills, as a mere 28% say their managers are skilled at PM. This could be partially due to lack of training, with just two-fifths saying most of their organization’s managers have received sufficient training in PM.
“Focus on performance management training for managers is key in these times of unpredictability,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com. “Communication, goal-setting, and ongoing feedback are critical. Employers must ensure individuals are performing and productive and, as a result, business is surviving and thriving.”
The good news is that many organizations have been improving their PM processes and systems in recent years, are planning for even more improvements in the near future, and have quickly adapted to the current health crisis with increased remote communication and discussions about employee health and well-being.
